Row by Row

Row by Row is starting up soon and I just finished one last week and realized I had two done that I hadn't blogged yet.  So, here are the latest ones completed.  I have a lot to do yet.  These little quilts have great memories of trips to visit the various quilt shops and picking up these cute patterns or kits.  Even though I have many to finish, I will probably pick up a bunch of new ones this year ☺.

Christopher's Canadian baby quilt

Last year our Church sponsored a refugee family and they just had a baby boy recently.  We were including her in the shower, which unfortunately had to be canceled, even though it's her second baby 👶.  It's a first Canadian baby.

I found this Canadian panel in my stash with some fabric in the same line and thought this would be perfect for the Canadian born baby.  We delivered the quilt to them last weekend as well and had a lovely little visit with Roza and their 4 year old daughter Christina, half in English and half in her language.

The panels were a lot of fun.  I cut them apart and added the grey with white maple leafs and then added the companion print to the top and bottom.

I quilted it with wavy lines. The binding is also from this line of fabric.

I happened to have a stuffed bambi in my gift stash and wrapped it up for Christina.  She was thrilled with her little yellow gift bag!

Baby quilt for Aria

Our Church ladies always host a baby shower for first babies.  The shower was scheduled at the end of March and of course with this virus, that had to be canceled.  So, we delivered the quilt personally this past weekend and had a lovely little porch visit as well☺.

This quilt was for Becky's baby Aria.  I had picked up the bunny rabbit fabric awhile ago at a local quilt shop.  I was going to put the white rabbit fabric (on the back) on the front of the quilt, but accidentally cut the brown!  I was worried that it was too strong, but once the binding was on, it looked great and it was probably a happy mistake :-).  I quilted it with straight lines which seemed to suit this pattern.  I used up most of the fabric in the back as well.  (Click on the photo for a larger view.)

Table runners

I found some pictures on my camera of some table runners I finished in October!  It's about time to post them.  I still have a stack of runners to quilt in a basket in a corner.  Once I start quilting one, I usually do a few at at time ☺. (Click on the photos to enlarge.)

I received a kit from a friend of mine and put it together a couple of years ago.  It's so nice to have it finally quilted.  It's very spring like.

I quilted it on my Bernina 830 vintage machine with echoed swirls all over which suited it.

The backing was included in the kit as well.

This was a sample for a class to try out a pattern.

Backing for the fall table topper

This little mat was a little gift at a booth at Quilt Canada a few years ago.  We received a few 5" squares with a link for a pattern on the internet.  I quilted it with interlocking squares.

Ashley's Baby quilt

This quilt was made for my niece Ashley's baby boy.  Fortunately we had a shower for her before the lock down happened.  We haven't been able to visit the baby, but at least he has his quilt 😍

The finished quilt.  This was a panel which I cut apart and framed with solids in the colours that matched the backing fabric.

It was quilted in simple wavy lines

These animals are just so adorable

The backing is a companion print to the panel which I found in different shops.

The Quilter's Field Guide to Colour part 3

Since today was a rainy day and it was Saturday, I played with more colour and continued making more bear paw blocks representing the rest of the seasons.  I did the spring blocks yesterday in this blog post.  It was a lot of fun rooting through my scraps (and a few special fabrics from my stash) and finding the right colours and moods for the swatches I chose to represent the various seasons.  Here are the results of today's fun.
(Click on the photos to enlarge.)

First half of the colours I picked for the four seasons

Second half of the colours for the seasons

Winter bear paw block

Fall bear paw block...I couldn't decide which colour to use for the paws so I did two.

Here are the summer blocks.  I made a mistake and cut too many paws so I cut more background and focus fabric since you can't have too much summer, right? ☺

Here are all my blocks so far.

The Quilter's Field Guide to Colour 2

This month's colour lesson from Rachel Hauser's book was linked to the colours of the seasons.  Take a look here for the first post on these exercises.  We had to take 8 different colour ways (one was neutrals) and choose a swatch from each colour to represent the four seasons.  And, then take the choices from the current season to make one or more bear paw blocks.  This is definitely more difficult that it looks at first glance!  First of all, there are all the decisions on sorting the colours into the proper groups.  Is this particular swatch purple, pink, red or orange?  Or maybe neutral?  I finally sorted all the colours into warm and cool groups first. I even got my colour wheel out to help me sort them out!  It was amazing matching up some fabrics to the spring row and finding the perfect ones!  These scraps were left over from a quilt I made for my granddaughter Emma called, Fancy Forest.   I ended up making four spring blocks using the same center focus fabric but different paws.

My rows of colours minus the ones used in this exercise

This focus fabric fit well with the green and pink and "sand" that I chose for my neutral

Loved how this fabric went so well with the spring fabrics (except the purple ☺

My four bear paw blocks.  Amazing how different that center fabric looks with the different coloured paws.

If I have a bit of free time before next month's exercise, I may try more blocks from the other seasons.
