One Block Wonder Tulips

 I picked up this tulip fabric at a quilt shop quite a few years ago.  I really didn't need any fabric, but I walked by it a few times, then picked it up and carried it around and the rest is history.  I bought enough repeats to make a one block wonder.

 The shop also had beautiful fabrics to go with it and I picked up a lot of fat quarters just in case I might 'need' to make cubes to go into the quilt.

The cubes are definitely going into the quilt!

I tried various layouts, but nothing was really speaking to me.

I liked the clusters of cubes in it, but it wasn't large enough yet for a nice lap quilt.

After much rearranging, I was happy with the layout.

A closeup of the lovely quilting that my friend across the street, Chris Bogart does for me on her long arm machine.  It is bound with the original fabric and a piece is also incorporated into the backing.

 

Progress on a few projects....

I made some progress in the sewing room in the last two days. I had the blocks on the design wall for the selvage cubes and the One Block Wonder. I had bought an audio book last week and plugged that into the computer and listened to it as I sewed the rows and background together. That made a somewhat boring job a lot more enjoyable. Here is the selvage cube top so far. I decided to go a little bright with the background since it's going to hang in my sewing room. The next step is to make a selvage piano key style border around it and then a 2 1/2" orange border and then I can get it quilted and hung up!  Update:  The finished quilt can be seen here.

My daughter in law came over Tuesday afternoon and we did the final arrangement on the One Block Wonder. As soon as she left, I started sewing the hexagons and cubes together in rows then started sewing the rows together. This morning I finished sewing the last few rows and trimmed the bottom edges. I'm really liking this project. I hope to pick up some of the navy blue on Friday for a border around the whole quilt. I'm thinking of a gold lippy between the navy border and navy binding. I think that would frame it nicely.

Another cube!

I finally got to the Marsh Store on Thursday and picked up the "One block Wonders - Encore" book with the patterns for the cubes. While I was there, I found a background fabric to use in between the cubes.

I made another cube last night...the bottom right one. It's called the 'bottom slice' :-). These cubes are so fun to work on, but you do have to keep your wits about you when sewing them. When you have them close up on the sewing table, you don't get the cube look...they look like trapezoids and triangles! The center seam is not sewn yet as you have to do that last. I have another one half finished, and hope to post a few more soon.

CUBE MANIA!!

We had a fabulous day together at my friend Amy's house. We got together with five of us to sew cubes. What fun!! And addictive too.... Here is Amy getting us organized:

All the blocks we finished this afternoon..sorry this picture is a little dark...if Amy sends me better ones, I'll replace it :-). These blocks are not sewn together down the middle yet. When you have all the blocks laid out for your project, you sew them together in rows to avoid set in seams.

Of course we had fabulous food to go along with our sewing day...yummy potato soup, pastries and scones, fruity tea and biscotti and dark chocolate pieces! Mmmmmmm....what a great day!! Thanks for your hospitality Amy. It was a great day.
