Three Baby quilts finished

Last month there were two showers for new babies.  I was only able to attend one of them, but passed on the other quilt to the new baby's aunt to add to the gifts at the shower.

The first baby quilt was for Allison and John's new baby, Taylor.  I had picked up a kit at The Quilt Kitchen in Exeter in the spring.  I had to cut the striped fabric along the short side of the FQ's to make the stripes go across the strips instead of lengthwise.  I did have more fabric of three of the stripes, and managed to make the fourth one work with leftover pieces.  It love the way it turned out...happy 😀.

I quilted this one with diagonal lines along the seams

Found a Tula Pink backing for it which had all the colours in it.
The second quilt was the last of the One Block Wonder quilts using the Dr. Suess book panel.  The other two quilts can be seen here and here.  This one was for Leda and Mike's baby, Colton.  Leda can read Spanish so I managed to find "Green Eggs and Ham" in Spanish to add to the gift.

This one was quilted with straight lines across the quilt

Loved the individual blocks that came out of the hexagons

The last quilt was for Caroline and Kyle's baby, Callie.  I had this top finished already.  It was a free pattern off the internet and I've made it a few times and went back to credit the pattern designer and cannot find it anywhere.  I tried searching by photo and it matches colours of the fabrics, but not the pattern.  If I ever find it again, I will add the credit!  If you purchase enough length of the two solid fabrics, you can make two quilts at a time...bonus.  You can see the opposite quilt, plus another colour way of the same pattern here.

I quilted it all over with a floral pattern on my vintage Bernina 830.

Dr. Suess baby quilt - February UFO Finish

The second Dr. Suess one block wonder quilt from the panel below was finished this week and delivered to a new baby at his shower on Thursday :-).  This was definitely a very fun quilt to work on.  I quilted it with diagonal lines 1/4" away from the seams which worked very well.  The seams are all pressed open on these OBW quilts so you don't want to stitch in the ditch. I am linking up with The Crafty Quilter for her February UFO challenge.

Dr. Suess panel OBW baby quilts

I bought a Dr. Suess book panel probably five or six years ago in a clearance bin and wondered if that would work for a One Block Wonder.  Wow, did it ever!  Just pure fun to work on this one.  I got so many hexies out of the panel that I could make three baby quilts.  They've been sitting in a drawer for awhile waiting for the right baby to come along to gift them to.  The first one is finished and going to baby Nora.

I thought I would end up discarding some of the hexagons as I figured they would not be very interesting, but amazingly even the ones with the white from the edges worked out very well!  I used every hexie.  I separated them into three piles by colour.  This one used the blue and yellow ones.  The second one is set with green and the third one will be orange/red.  I will post those when they are finished.

I had the yellow and blue top together and was adding the solid yellow sashings and borders and the quilt was hanging on my design wall. I happened to be sitting in a chair on the opposite side of the room and contemplating why I put the hexies in that particular order and wondering what ever I was thinking when I designed it!  Just before I sewed the panels onto the main quilt, I realized that I had turned it upside down!  No wonder it looked so out of balance...all the dark colours were on the top and the light on the bottom.  Fortunately I was able to turn it around yet, but the panels ended up on the other side.  Pictures of the two versions below 😀.

The original panel (I had purchased 7 so I could use the original in the quilts somewhere).
Here are some of the fun blocks that were produced from this panel:

This is the layout I was contemplating from across the room!  It just felt really unbalanced.

I didn't have enough yellow solid left to cut more sashings so the panels ended up on the right side of the quilt.  The baby won't care or even notice 😉

The finished quilt.

I had this piece of Dr. Suess fabric in my stash which was perfect for the backing.
I'm linking up to Julie's blog, The Crafty Quilter with my second finish for the month of January!

Dr. Suess Quilt finished

I finally finished the baby quilt for my daughter's foster baby this week.  I bought a Creative Grids 15 degree wedge ruler and wanted to try it out.  I found almost enough Dr. Suess prints in my stash to make half the wedges; added a stripe and a polka dot or two and had enough.  This was a very easy quilt to make!  It came together very nicely.  I really like the idea of a round play quilt.

My husband suggested doing a 'squiggly' spiral around the quilt which was very quick and easy!

Dr. Suess Quilt

When the Dr. Suess prints came out, I just had to have a bundle of them. Shirley from the Marsh Store was at our guild quilt show and I bought a bundle of FQ's. It had my oldest son's name written all over it! He has a lot of the Dr. Suess books and has many of them memorized and reads them to his kids all the time. The dilemna was whether a 32 year old guy would like a Dr. Suess quilt LOL. I made him a lap quilt this Christmas to read stories to his kids. Here is the finished quilt:

I told Lauren and Leah, Tim's two daughters, that they could help their Dad open this gift. They loved the Dr. Suess quilt :-)

Trying out the new quilt with Lauren, Joey (cousin) and Leah:

Daughter in law, Heather (pictured in background), made all the kids a cool fleece hat for Christmas. They willingly posed for a 'funny face' photo LOL

The kids then put Josh's hat on Tim for a picture with the Dr. Suess quilt. He's nice and warm and cozy now!

I also made a little stocking for each of the 7 grandkids, plus one for the baby due in a few days. The stockings will stay at Grandma's house to be filled every year:
